Postpartum Doulas

The first few weeks/months with a newborn, called the postpartum period, can be a challenging time for all parents, new or experienced veterans. Many parents are sent home without an instruction manual and in today's society, we often find ourselves alone without family or community for support. Having a postpartum doula come to the home to help provide care can greatly help new and established families in this critical adjustment and bonding stage of life.

Postpartum doulas will:

* Provide hands-on education on infant and mother care

* Offer a listening, non-judgmental ear

* Assess and help with breastfeeding and pumping

* Shop for groceries and prepare meals, take care of the baby¡¯s laundry and light housecleaning

* Spend time with the baby, allowing parents time with each other or older children

* Introduce parenting tips, helping parents to learn skills that will enable them to cope with their new responsibilities

* Screen for hurdles such as breastfeeding challenges or postpartum mood disorders and make referrals to any local or informational resources that the parents might need

* Work herself out of a job by helping parents to gather the skills and resources that they will need in the upcoming weeks and months
